Lauralton Celebrates 20th Annual All-Girls Science Olympics Featuring Dr. Henry Lee

Lauralton Hall’s campus buzzed with energy and excitement as more than 100 middle school girls from across Connecticut gathered for the school’s 20th Annual All Girls Science Olympics—a milestone event designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

For two decades, the Science Olympics has been one of Lauralton Hall’s most beloved traditions, offering girls in grades 5–8 the opportunity to dive into hands-on challenges, collaborate in teams, and see themselves as future scientists and innovators. This year’s anniversary celebration featured engaging, real-world activities that encouraged critical thinking and teamwork across multiple STEM disciplines.

Among the highlights were a Forensics Crime Room, where participants analyzed clues to solve a mystery using real forensic techniques, and a Flight Simulator experience led by Lauralton’s own all-girls engineering team, which introduced students to the science of aviation and aeronautics.

The event’s keynote speaker, world-renowned forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee, captivated students and guests with stories from his groundbreaking career in criminal investigations. Dr. Lee’s inspiring message emphasized perseverance, curiosity, and the power of science to change the world.

“Science Olympics empowers middle school girls to build confidence and ignite their passion for science and math by developing critical thinking and analytical skills during a pivotal stage in their educational journey,” said Dr. Sue Cavar ’88, Science Department Chair at Lauralton Hall.

Head of School Beth Coyne added, “Having Dr. Lee join us for this milestone year was such an honor. His message of discovery and determination perfectly reflects the spirit of this event and Lauralton’s mission to inspire young women to lead and achieve.”

As Lauralton Hall celebrates 20 years of the Science Olympics, the event continues to reflect the school’s deep commitment to empowering young women through education and innovation—showing every participant that science is not only accessible, but exciting, collaborative, and full of possibility.
