New Youth & Government officers elected

Posted on May 11, 2008

Junior Livia Fry was recently elected president of Lauralton Hall’s Youth & Government Club for the 2008-09 school year. Other students elected to lead this popular group include juniors:
* Marisa Carpini, Vice President of Parliamentary Procedure
* Sara Johnson, Vice President of Political Parties
* Samantha Halliday, Vice President of Bill Writing
* Molly Viner, Vice President of Debate
* Kaleigh Ferguson, Secretary

Led by club officers and faculty adviser Mark Allen, Lauralton Youth & Government participants learn how the U.S. government and legislative systems work by doing. They write mock bills, debate, follow parliamentary procedure, participate in a mock legislature and, each March, compete in the YMCA Youth & Government State Convention in Hartford.

Club members interested in pursing a legal career also have the opportunity to participate in a statewide Youth in Law competition, where students debate legal cases and precedents in front of a panel of practicing attorneys. Lauralton sophomores Polly Grzegorczyk and Emily Nichols took first prize in the spring 2008 competition.
