Center for Guidance and College Planning
Lauralton’s Center for Guidance and College Planning is exceptional. Our newly renovated, multi-purpose facility provides a safe, supportive, environment. It’s the ideal setting for an impromptu one-on-one meeting or for a college recruiter’s group presentation. Most importantly, the department is structured so that counselors really get to know their advisees. Not only is there a very low student-to-guidance-counselor ratio, but students remain with the same counselor throughout their four years. Counselors are there to advise on academics and personal issues and help the student in her quest to find the perfect college.
Through individual and small group meetings, students are guided through a comprehensive program which includes goal setting, decision making, personal strengths and career preferences. The counseling department follows a careful process of encouraging students to challenge themselves and gain awareness of their own values, learning styles and personal attributes in this important stage of their development.
In addition, counselors work with students in these areas:
- Course Selection
Counselors walk students through the process of choosing from appropriate challenging and demanding college preparatory, honors and advanced placement courses that are offered in all of the academic disciplines and described in the Program of Studies.
- Standardized Testing
Explore Test (pre ACT) in 9th grade
PSAT (pre SAT) in 10th and 11th grade
SAT I and SAT II in 11th and 12th grade
ACT in 11th and 12th grade
Students are given the modified Myers-Briggs personality inventory, “Do what you are?” through their online Naviance accounts. Inventory results use Naviance Career Clusters to connect students with careers that fit their personality profile. Students can then link to colleges offering majors which lead them to these careers.
